The Hewing Hotel is a landmark project in the Historic North Loop in Minneapolis. Originally the Jackson Building, this structure was a complex candidate for redevelopment. As the historic and pre-design consultants on the project AWH provided the technical expertise necessary to bridge the gap between rigorous preservation standards and modern hospitality requirements, transforming constraints into creative opportunities.
AWH’s primary goal was to lead the historic tax credit strategy and oversee preservation compliance, working alongside partners ESG, Alpha Theory, and Aparium Hotel Group. We ensured that the 116,000 SF adaptive reuse conversion maintained the architectural integrity required for its status in a historic district while allowing for the luxury interventions of a modern boutique hotel.
By applying our deep knowledge of building codes and adaptive reuse design, AWH helped transform an underutilized warehouse into an iconic Minneapolis destination. In addition to preventing valuable building materials from being sent to the landfill, the Hewing Hotel demonstrates how specialized historic consulting directly unlocks the hidden economic and spatial value within a city’s existing architectural fabric.
